Free Day of Yoga began in Austin, Texas, USA in 1999. It quickly grew in size and popularity, and has spread to other US cities, as well as Guam and the Netherlands. In 2014, we brought Free Yoga Day to Wellington, and had our first event with 37 classes and over 750 participants. We have now had two successful Wellington Free Yoga Days, and continue to offer free yoga to Wellingtonians on Labour Day.

On Monday 24th October 2016, you can experience a range of yoga classes, all for FREE!

Yoga classes will be offered at yoga studios, gyms, parks and fitness centres. Classes will begin in the morning and continue throughout the day and into the early evening.

Wellington Free Yoga Day provides an opportunity for our talented yoga teachers to share their knowledge of yoga. Without the barriers of our day to day schedules, we hope that Wellingtonians can try out yoga on Free Yoga Day, and find a style or teacher to suit them.

There are many styles of yoga – Hatha, Iyengar, Bikram, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Yin, Raja, to name a few – and each style is unique in the same way as styles of dance or music. Some yoga is physically challenging and athletic, and other styles are relaxing and/or focus on stretching and breathing. Each yoga teacher has their own style and will emphasise different aspects of yoga. Please see the class descriptions to find the right style to suit you.
